A Brief History Of Jewellery

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

It is estimated that men and women have been adorning their bodies with jewellery since about 75,000 years ago, which makes the art of jewellery something that has always been a huge cultural aspect to many countries. The first ‘types’ of jewellery as such, were objects such as animal teeth, garlands of flowers, bracelets of woven grass, shells, and stone. It is believed that people were exchanging these as gifts in eras long before our time.

Initially, jewellery started off as a simple adornment to the body. However, even thousands of years ago, meanings began to arise in association with jewellery. Such connotations include love, religion, wealth, prestige, rank, class, and sometimes authority, traditions that sill continue today, where diamond rings may be representational of romance and eternity and other diamond jewellery may be considered to represent prestige or wealth.Swarovski-Pink-Heart-Lock-Pendant.jpg

In the very first century, rings of thin iron were given to brides-to-be in Rome. It is estimated that the diamond ring tradition in relation to marriage began in approximately 1475 in Italy, however in many cultures rings have been used as signifiers in marriage for centuries to due their ‘never-ending’ shape.

Today, the diamond jewellery market is vast, with many precious stones having been discovered over time and adopted their own meanings. Today, jewellery is apparent in thousands of styles, ranging from boho to elegant to retro and has become an important embellishment to any outfit. At Rox, we have a wide array of charming products that meet these modern jewellery needs.

Want Him To Get You The Perfect Ring?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Getting the right man to marry you is no easy task. From Jane Austen onwards, clever women have struggled to succeed in this tricky business. Of course, women know they don’t have to get married, but some of them at least enjoy a wedding. Joking aside, once the right man is secured, the next task is traditionally to recieve a sentimental and precious ring from him.

At ROX, we understand just how challenging it can be for a man to find the perfect diamond engagement rings when he wishes to propose as the pressure is mounted on. If your boyfriend is typical of his role, he has probably never taken an interest in your jewellery box, so it can be stressful for you too to think he has full control of picking a piece of diamond jewellery that you may have been envisaging for many years.

Unless he’s Mr Romantic, most men may often look past the sentimental value of  diamond engagement rings. He may go out looking for a valuable investment, rather than something beautiful. Make sure you make it clear to him as soon as wedding bells are ringing; diamond jewellery is not all about money.

Also, be sure to tell all your female relatives and friends exactly what type of diamond you like. When your future husband decides to drop down on one knee, the first thing he will probably do is panic and go to your mum or best friend for ring advice. Take advantage of the fact they are there and will want him to get you the perfect ring too.

Completely Individual, Completely You

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

The old song goes about diamonds being a girl’s best friends; that can easily be said about all types of jewellery. The rules and etiquette of wearing different types of bracelets, earrings, rings and watches have all been booted out of the door.

The discerning woman of today wants her jewels to be as individual as she is. She will no longer be bound by convention and what type of trinkets and charms she can or cannot wear. She is no longer interested whether white gold goes with smart casual or yellow gold goes with that little black dress.

Women have rebelled against what convention has set out for them when it comes to what jewellery they should wear, at what times of day or night this or that piece is more suitable. There shouldn’t be rules regarding what looks good – diamonds are such an investment that you want to showcase them as much as is possible.
