BAUME & MERCIER

SHELBY COBRA

9th February 2017

Baume & Mercier made a lot of watch collectors and motoring enthusiasts very happy with the release of their Capeland Shelby Cobra limited edition. This year they’ve got two better by unveiling three new Shelby inspired pieces! The new pieces are part of the Clifton Club collection, and all incorporate different and exciting elements of the iconic Cobra styling.

Designed to commemorate the 196mph speed record set by the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, the first of the new timepieces is limited to just 196 pieces. The most striking feature of this timepiece is the blue and white half-and-half dial, which was inspired by the colours chosen for the original Daytona’s tail. Besides the obvious styling features there area host of smaller details that reveal themselves only under closer inspection.

The two chronograph pushers, for example, are highly detailed replicas of the original Daytona foot pedals, and the tachymeter around the inside of the bezel highlights 196mph in red. The reverse of the watch has even been painstakingly designed to resemble the wheels found on the original Daytona. Inside the 44mm steel and titanium case is the Swiss made movement powering the timepiece, the Cobra offers 42 hours of power reserve, and is supplied on a sporty blue carbon-fibre embossed calfskin leather strap with red stitching.

The other two pieces in the new collection are both limited to 1964 pieces, owing to the fact that the Daytona’s momentous speed record occurred at the 1964 Le Mans race. They both feature 44mm polished and satin finished steel cases and are also supplied on black calfskin leather straps, which are embossed with a carbon-like pattern and highlighted by white stitching. The two dial options are both equally sporty, with contrasting sub-dials, and red chronograph hands – the central seconds hand even features the Cobra logo on its’ reverse. Swiss made movements lie at the heart of these two timepieces as well, and both timepieces offer classic good looks in fresh and modern colours.

All three watches in this new collection are a testament to the skill of Baume & Mercier Design Director Alexandre Peraldi, who has managed to make three commemorative watches with a motoring theme without them appearing at all forced – a rare occurance in watch making. They all offer superb performance and deliver the driving watch aesthetics that are so popular with watch lovers the world over.
