HUBLOT BIG BANG FERRARI UNICO

A partnership between Hublot and Ferrari made perfect sense when it was first announced – both are giants of their industry, and both posses an insatiable desire to progress – and it has grown stronger with every collaboration. There have been quite a few joint efforts released, but the timepiece featured here is particularly interesting.

Based on their immensely popular Big Bang Unico, Hublot have made some sizeable changes to this timepiece. The 45mm size and one-click strap change mechanism are retained, but the bezel has been modified so that the 6 H-screws are now sunken in to the bezel. In addition, the crown is now integrated in to the case; a small change, but something that has a big impact on the aesthetics of the watch. The case and bezel are crafted from 18ct King Gold – a metal that offers a deeper red lustre than standard rose or pink gold, thanks to a higher proportion of copper and the inclusion of platinum.

The dial on the Big Bang Ferrari is unbelievably well constructed, as Hublot have managed to make a highly detailed skeletonised dial that is also very legible. The Arabic numerals at 12, 6, 8 and 10 are clear and well displayed, and feature gold highlights around the exterior. The running seconds are found at 9 o’clock in the form of a 5-spoke Ferrari wheel in black. The 60-minute counter at 3 o’clock is again highlighted in gold, and the date window behind is picked out beautifully in Ferrari yellow and red. Last but not least the iconic Ferrari prancing horse is located at 6 o’clock completing the dial and giving it a beautiful balance.

Driving the Ferrari is an in-house Unico fly back chronograph movement, offering 72 hours of power reserve. Interestingly, Hublot chose to use a column-wheel mechanism to regulate the chronograph, and this can be seen in operation through the dial at 6 o’clock (behind the Ferrari horse). Details like this are what sets Hublot apart from other watchmakers, and are what makes the partnership with Ferrari work so beautifully. This timepiece is limited to 500 pieces worldwide.
