the 5C's
diamond guide
The 5Cs - Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat and Certification are a universal and effective communication tool used to determine the quality of diamonds. Discover why ROX diamonds have superior sparkle and beauty.
1. cut
Cutting is so important because it unlocks a diamond’s beauty and sparkle. A perfectly cut diamond will be staggering thanks to its brightness - how much light is reflected, fire - the rainbow effect created when light hits the surface and scintillation - the flashes of light created when the diamond moves. These are key in producing the perfect diamond engagement ring your fiancé-to-be will treasure forever.
2. colour
Diamonds come in a vast range of natural colours and each is unique and enchanting in its own right. To grade diamond colour, there is a scale to follow to find the most beautiful diamonds in the world. The diamond colour alphabet begins at ‘D’ and runs through to ‘Z’ from completely colourless to diamonds with a warm yellow tone. Whiter diamonds are more rare and valuable.
3. clarity
Clarity refers to the number, location, size and type of ‘inclusions’ within a diamond. These are tiny little marks or ‘flaws’ present inside the diamond. Like nature’s birthmarks, they are also known as clarity characteristics and are completely natural in diamond formation. A truly flawless diamond is extremely rare as it’s possible to find these little freckles and birthmarks in almost every diamond in the world. The fewer or smaller the clarity characteristics, the more beautiful, rare and valuable the diamond.
4. carat
Carat refers to the diamond’s weight and in turn, its overall size. Usually, the bigger the diamond, the higher the carat number. However, when comparing two diamonds, a smaller diamond may be more valuable than a larger diamond if it possesses a far superior cut, whiter colour and flawless clarity. Remember, the cut of a diamond is above all the most important, so bear that in mind when shopping for the perfect diamond engagement ring. You want the cut to be absolutely perfect or the carat becomes just another number.
5. certificate
The majority of our diamonds are provided with a Diamond Certificate from an independent laboratory. This showcases the characteristics of the diamond like its Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight and gives you extra piece of mind. It acts like a passport which tells you all about your diamond's credentials. A Diamond Certificate certainly can't explain why your fiance-to-be loves one diamond engagement ring more than another so we advise not to be obsessed with the certificate, be obsessed with the diamond.

This shape is characterised by its trimmed corners combining the elegance of the emerald cut diamond with the brilliance of the round. Radiant cut diamond engagement rings feature a staggering 70 facets enabling the colour movement within the stone to be maximised. The radiant cut lends beautifully to yellow diamonds as the standout, sparkling cut radiates with an added diamond halo. Showcasing class and sophistication, radiant cut diamonds are a sight to behold.

Heart shaped diamonds are a modified version of the round brilliant cut. Because they reflect lots of light, the color of a heart shaped diamond is harder to distinguish than it is in a diamond with a large table, such as an Emerald or Asscher cut.
Also known as the square emerald cut, Asscher cut diamonds are roughly square in shape when viewed from above but have cut corners for more light to enter the diamond. They typically have 50 or 58 facets and their ideal length to width ratio is 1 to 1.04. Because of their many facets, high crown, and depth, they can produce outstanding brilliance and create a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect.
Cut
{{cut}}
The diamond, which has an even pattern of bright and dark areas, scores in the top category for all grade-setting determinants.
This diamond’s grade is determined by brightness, scintillation, and polish. Although no individual proportions would necessarily cause its brightness or scintillation to perform poorly, the combination of this particular set of proportions leads to increased darkness in the pavilion mains.
This diamond’s grade is limited by its scintillation. In this case, the somewhat shallow pavilion angle produces dark pavilion mains.
This diamond’s grade is limited by its scintillation. The combination of a shallow crown angle and a somewhat shallow pavilion angle leads to a face-up appearance with a lack of contrast and general darkness.
This diamond’s grade is limited by its weight ratio. Although most of the proportions for this diamond are fairly standard, the extremely thick girdle greatly increases the total depth. Therefore, this diamond’s diameter is much smaller than its carat weight would indicate.
Colour
{{colour.name}}
While there are differences in color between D, E, and F diamonds, they can be detected only by a gemologist in side by side comparisons, and rarely by the untrained eye. D-F diamonds should only be set in white gold / platinum. Yellow gold reflects color, negating the diamond's colorless effect.
While containing traces of color, G-J diamonds are suitable for a platinum or white gold setting, which would normally betray any hint of color in a diamond. Because I-J diamonds are more common than the higher grades, they tend to be a great value. An I-J diamond may retail for half the price of a D diamond. Within the G-J range, price tends to increase 10-20% between each diamond grade.

Beginning with K diamonds, color (usually a yellow tint) is more easily detected by the naked eye. Set in yellow gold, these warm colored diamonds appeal to some, and are an exceptional value. Others will feel they have too much color. Due to its perceptible color tint, a K diamond is often half the price of a G diamond.
Diamonds in the N-R color range have an easily seen yellow or brown tint, but are much less expensive than higher grades. Lumera does not carry diamonds in this color range due to a lack of demand. If you desire a diamond in this range, request a price quote using the custom diamond search.
For almost all customers, S-Z diamonds have too much color for a white diamond. Lumera does not carry diamonds in this color range. If you desire a diamond in this range, request a price quote using the custom diamond search.
Clarity
{{clarity.name}}
Flawless (FL) No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions visible under 10x magnification.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions are observed with effort under 10x magnification, but can be characterized as minor.
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification
Included (I1, I2, and I3) Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification which may affect transparency and brilliance
Carat
